Good Morning from the other side of the pond, a great morning too with the sun shining brightly, little wind and a blue, clear sky……a day for walking by the beach, sadly I am too busy to do that but hopefully this evening will see me doing just that! And a rare old week it has been too……to start with, last weekend saw a local raft race take place, something that used to happen every year but of late had been shelved, here we are having it brought back. It was fun to watch and there was a lot of frivolity and fun taking place anything to stop other teams winning. You can see from the photos how wet some people were. It has been suggested that we bring it back to Southend through Rotary, who used to organise it each year, watch this space for news of the event. Of course I can imagine everyone preparing for The Lake Worth Raft Race, all trying to keep their boats secret and some not managing that aspect at all, such an exciting and fun time for everyone, I would love to be there. Actually I will be in America, unfortunately not with you but in Rhode Island staying with friends, I am looking forward to it very much.
I went to a beautiful concert in the park, my great niece playing the flute is a treat to watch and listen to…..Priory Park is a lovely park about 10 minutes from my house, beautifully landscaped with a large pond and a children’s playground and outdoor fitness machines and gardens full of the most wonderful flowers, vibrant in colour and spreading their aroma across the park. Then there is the Priory itself, renovated recently and looking every inch as if it had stepped out of 1087, when it was mentioned in the Doomsday Book, it is fascinating and holds many interesting artefacts and folklore. I love visiting this park. The bandstand in which the orchestra played is a beautiful Victorian structure which was rescued from the cliffs at the seafront when bad weather caused the cliffs to slip and leave the bandstand teetering on the edge of the cliff. I remember walking past it on a Sunday afternoon going into town and stopping to watch people dancing and listen to the orchestra play!
I have trying to avoid the biggest event this this week, the referendum!!!!
It started like any other day except the balance of our country was to be changed this day and there was an air of excitement around and the only topic of conversation on the street was about whether to Brexit or remain. No matter where you went, the pub, shops, on the bus, in the car, on the television…..everywhere, the topic of conversation stayed around this topic as getting everyone to see it from the same viewpoint was crucial.
Polling stations are closed at 10 pm so the day was pretty much the same as usual and the polls that had changed constantly throughout the previous weeks finished with the remain in Britain party being the victors. We went to
bed thinking that this must the case but morning brought the news that we were going to leave the EU and make an attempt to return to the days when we were governing ourselves and not being part of the club that is the European Union and being told what to do by them whether we wanted to or not. And so it remains to be seen what will happen but for the moment the conversation and endless television programmes still revolve around the issue. Incredible and unrealistic suggestions being bandied around……have another referendum, Scotland to stay part of the EU and break away from the UK, declare the referendum null and void and go back on this decision to leave……and so it goes on with endless debates and chat shows…….
I myself think we will be fine in the end and will return strong and victorious if we accept the decision based on our wonderful rules of democracy and move forward together to make it work. Yes, there will be tough times but also good times and we will find countries out of the EU who will be happy to trade with us and we will rise again……we have to!
The Little Free Library project is going well and they are all now completed and the process of delivering and installing them has started. We now have one installed outside the new community hub that we opened on Saturday…one going to a local Junior school, another to be delivered in the morning to a playgroup on Canvey Island. Another in Thorpe Bay, one on the Pegasus Estate and the others to be installed when I return from Rhode Island.
I found my favourite shop in City Place where I spent many hours helping with their window displays, now has a branch in one of our local shopping malls Bluewater and it is every bit as wonderful and they have courses to attend, I cannot wait for the email listing the dates and times…woohoo!
So I must finish and go to bed as it is an early morning taking an assembly where I will talking about Little Free Libraries……enjoy your week, my next blog will come from Rhode Island and the week after that from upstate New York where we will be visiting with our very own Mel and Vinnie, something I am looking forward to very much.
