back home in Lake Worth Beach

Back home again!!!!! And that is exactly whatimage 6 it feels like when I set foot on USA soil each time, that familiarity, that feeling of belonging… is wonderful.

I always stop and think about what I  love about Lake Worth and how it differs from my life in England. Things I love about Lake Worth are …. my friends, the projects, community, the house, bike riding, social life, beach……

Things I miss about my life in England are……my friends and family…..the projects….community…my house…..riding my bike….social life….beach………I leave you to work that one out!!! Suffice it to say, I am very lucky and very happy.image

So, it all continues as it usually does here…..we hit the floor running. Starting with the Thursday bike ride which was followed by a pool party at Glenn and Diana’s to welcome us back. It was wonderful and as if we had never been away, chatting and laughing catching up on news and gossip, sharing the food and making more arrangements to meet for various activities and social engagements…

This has led to the last two weeks containing the following…..image 2

Artoberfest, like Octoberfest but full of art and music, amazingly colourful and vibrant….trips to the ocean, with and without friends… Benny’s  on the Beach…….the clean up at Bryant Park, where for the first time, I saw the tables that had been painted by High School Students, they are wonderful. Everyone was so happy to be picking up trash!!!!!

We helped at a roast Mark Easton, where people made fun and reminisced about, the person on the end of the roasting, a finely tuned event which was organised impeccably with nothing left to chance.  It was for the lovely Mark Easton, editor of our wonderful Lake Worth Herald. The event was put together amazingly by Buttons Brokovich who worked night and day to ensure that this esteemed man was honoured for everything that he does for the city. It was lovely to see his family and friends who were so proud of him and so touched by the event. 12122930_10153763128506742_7413224658156528119_nFunny how events like this always looks so easy from the outside and the tremendous hard work going on behind the scenes is largely unseen, the same with all successful events I imagine.

And then our pool developed a hole which got bigger little by little. Getting tenders for fixing it was lengthy but we chose the company we thought had been most thorough and we felt, honest about both the problem and the treatment. The worst was confirmed, it was going to be necessary to completely remove the plaster from the pool!!!! To cut a very long story short we are now at the stage where the plastering will happen tomorrow and we can fill it up again woohoo!!!! These things happen and you just have to get it done, it is going to look amazing!

And this weekend, what can I say???? Saturday was community at it’s best. For weeks Mary Lindsey had been posting about the little free library painting event image 6and people turned up in numbers and painted their hearts out. The libraries look fabulous and will be placed in public places as well as in the front yards of members of the community. As well as painting the libraries, people encouraged, washed brushes,12039369_442514362607916_6898781264824813250_n fed others, cleared up…..all in all a great project which confirmed that the citizens of Lake Worth always come up trumps when necessary. Look out for the wonderful libraries as they start to appear all over the city.image 7

Sunday started with the all you can eat for $5 breakfast down at The Community Gardens in D Street, it seems to me that the numbers of people attending grows each time…..I love this event and I love what The Scottish Rites members do for our community. If you are coming to the next breakfast in November it is the toy drive and all attendees are asked to bring an unwrapped toy to at least the value of $5. These toys are then distributed to the poorer communities whose children do not get Christmas gifts….a good cause!!!image 5

Then it was on to see a very new baby born, our friends new granddaughter ……. nothing like a new baby to make you feel all warm and fuzzy.

From there we went straight to The Core Ensemble, a moving musical and theatre production at St Andrews Church. It was all about the poor farmworkers  in Belle Glade, about the raw deal they get by way of low wages, how the children can be allowed to farm from the age of 5 {in this day and age} and told individual stories depicting this extremely hard life, about good and bad managers and bosses, about a people living a life that needs to be made easier. Following the production there was an opportunity to ask questions and then we were treated to an art display organised by The Norton and painted by the children of farmworkers……it was indeed very interesting. Some of the young artists were there and were very proud to show me their work and explain what the painting contained.image 3

The last event of the day was The Beach Club where the music was being supplied by the son of a friend….yet another occasion to meet up with even more friends and to spend the rest of the evening in the wonderful setting of the golf course.

It has been a great start to our time back here in Lake Worth…it will be interesting to see what the rest of our time here brings……I hope your week is a fabulous as I know mine is going to be……
