A person who gives money and time to help make life better for other people. We have such a person here in Lake Worth Beach, we have many. This is about someone new to us who purchased a lovely home and stepped right up . He was tired of Manhattan and landed in Parrot Cove, got two cats Tristan und Isolda. Not just anyone would pick such names, an opera buff? Walter Harper performed all over Europe as a Tenor in such productions as Tosca, La Boheme, La Traviata (my favorite) Turandot etc. etc.
Via His Realtors encouragement he joined the Cottages Group. For them he volunteered his design skills, did all the graphics, layouts and bike tour map. He graciously brought his expertise to the table where in NY he was paid $400 per hour for similar work. There, he designed book covers for Double Day and Penguin Putnam.
Monday Night he and Marion Cone (the lady in red ) are hosting a Book Signing Event at the Beach Club at the Lake Worth Municipal Golf Course from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday or Today depending when your reading this. They together made the decision to give ALL THE PROCEEDS OF THE BOOK to the Lake Worth Historic Museum and to the Friends of the Lake Worth Library.
Among his art collection, which is wonderfully arranged in his home, I spotted a photo of him in costume and I could have sworn it was Pavarotti. He has a vast collection of Tribal Art, French Fauve, 20th century art and Set design renderings from his performances.
It was an out of this project that He, Diana Scheiner and Susan Ona saw the need for an Information Center in Lake Worth. Susan became the driving force with assistance from Commissioner Andy Amoroso. Walter here, took a back seat and is one of the many volunteers behind the desk giving this time, just his time.
Delving more into his background and the next question of a world traveler is about his bucket list. “I’ve done everything I ever wanted to do, some twice”. So much for his bucket list. He does have another item he wants to accomplish however and again it is not for himself. He wants to create some sort of funding and he is willing to match those funds. It is to create a chair lift so everyone can see the Historic Collection that is housed on the second floor of the old Annex Bldg. or as we refer to that collection our Historic Museum. He gets these genes from his father who also was an extremely generous person.
This book was not sponsored and it came out of a need, when he was working on the bike tour and saw the value of such a guide for travelers visiting our fair, funky little village by the sea. Thank you Walter Harper for being who you are. The pocket guide-book will also be available at the Library, at the Cultural Center and of course at the Info Center. But come out and have it signed by both Marion and Walter.
