Welcoming back our Monday Guest Blogger
What a glorious morning here in Lake Worth….I hope it is going to be a good week for everyone
…..and of course, last week was as great as ever. This town just never stops and there is always something to do, somewhere to go, people to see and it is what I absolutely love about living here! I know that when you only visit for three months at a time, it is easy to never be bored….just as at home in England I do not always see what is around me until a visitor waxes lyrical about what they see. I love that because it always gives me a renewed interest in my surroundings and I start to notice things I have never noticed before! I hope that my ramblings about this beautiful city make you look at things with new eyes at times!
What a week it has been, I have enjoyed it all. I shared Mothers Day with friends in West Palm…barbecue and fun!
Tuesday I was in school, I love my voluntary job at Clifford Taylor, the children are such fun. Unlike England, the sessions are 35 minutes long and that means that we have to be very organised to get through the planned work. In English Primary (Kindergarten) Schools the children stay in the same classroom for most of the time. That way some topics can be repeated when the children do not understand fully. I find it interesting to see the differences between the two systems and find aspects of each better than the other, I think if we could mix the two, we would have perfect education systems! I have never taught in Elementary before as my career has been in High Schools and I am enjoying the change very much.
On Friday we had Field Day so I went to help as they were short of volunteers. As the academic year comes to a close there are more fun days on the timetable. The sports field was divided into sections with different activities taking place. My station consisted of 4 rows of soft balls, each row containing 10 balls, children had to attempt to get the balls through hoops of various sizes hanging across a bar. Oh boy, some of those children may be small but they can throw the balls a very long way! It was hot and at the end of each sessions, each station had to be put back in order. My 5th Grade helper Alex, who was amazing, and I ran around like crazy collecting the balls and putting them all back in neat rows only for the next group to start throwing them again. The kindergarten children were so small, I spend a huge amount of time lifting them as close to the hoops as possible in order for them to get the ball through….they were so pleased with themselves that they wanted to try again and again – phew!!!!! I must have lost pounds, but all good fun.
I spent time in Boca with friends, a new experience for me, I had been to FAU in Boca many times but never to the town centre, it was beautiful! We came back from there to The Evening on the Avenue and boy was it hopping, there was a great band playing, there were stalls selling a variety of goods, people were dancing and having fun, the Raft Race t shirt design was chosen, it was a beautifully warm evening and all was well with the world!
We sat at home last night and heard a sound on the patio window, there was the biggest frog just hanging there, they stay like that for ages just looking in……quite harmless you may say, but last year our pool was full of tadpoles and it had to treated to get rid of them. There were literally hundreds of them and it was the day before we were having a pool party, I know people love to swim with dolphins but somehow I thought tadpoles would not be as popular. We did not want the same thing happening again so we caught it in a plastic box…we were very careful and then we drove it a couple of blocks away and let it free…..another close escape.
And we had the pedlars on Thursday, followed by a pool party and I found a Retro Jetro car on Saturday that I did not have and friends came over for dinner and it was great!
Tomorrow we go to Belle Glade followed by Pahoke……everyone laughs when we tell them that, I guess all will be revealed when we visit and see for ourselves what it is like……I am excited!
And now, I am getting into the little free library project, busy getting people together at home to help me, it should be very successful and a lot of fun. I had no idea it was a global project……more on that one to follow.
There is no pedalling this Thursday as most of us will be at Don Ramon’s on Dixie watching a tango session and having a free lesson, anyone who wants to join us is most welcome.
Have a great week…….
