Hello from England…..which continues to bask in the most glorious weather, it really is most wonderful! Having said that, we certainly could do with some rain….our grass, plants and gardens are crying out to be watered. From what I hear, it is also very hot in Lake Worth, maybe too hot for some people I imagine! Never quite satisfied are we? The one thing I am absolutely certain of is that the sunshine brings a sense of well-being, a smile to the face, a kind of carefreeness and the world seems to be a happier place all round!
And talking of a happier place, England is on a high…we came FIRST in the Commonwealth Games, beating Australia and Canada….unbelievable! Our athletes have been amazing, some of them so young, yet so dedicated and enthusiastic, it has been a hugely exciting event to watch. It was started as A British Empire Event in the early 1930’s and has gone from strength to strength, now having some 74 nations taking part. Records have been broken, Personal Best’s has-been broken and I defy anyone watching the games not to have been inspired by what we have seen the past two weeks, youngsters of 13 Nd 14 taking part and actually winning medals is amazing, the confidence of youth and the determination and resilience knows no bounds…fabulous! The other thing which I have enjoyed hugely is the fact that the Paralympic events have been taking place along the regular competitions and this has made it all the more inclusive…a good touch! As I write this blog, the tv is on in the background and we are waiting for the closing ceremony to start, it promises to be spectacular ….. I will let you know!
It has been a week of celebrations, my sister had a birthday and to celebrate her milestone, we had a family do in Leigh on sea, a fishing village just along the coast goes where I live. I love more than anything to have these get together I have a large family and are all good at having fun. We range from 5 to 70…..huge fun had by all, ending with swimming and building sand castles on the beach ( well, that was me and the kids) and of course, our famous Rossi ice cream.
The only real work I have done this week is my voluntary work at Shared Space on Thursday! I love my days there ….I enjoy the challenge of changing the window displays, loving it if a customer comes in to buy something from the window and then browsing the shop to buy more. I never underestimate the power of a good display. One of the other things I enjoy hugely is the interaction of people, we always have the same regulars coming in, sometimes just for a chat which is really what it is all about. One lovely lady came in this week to thank me for something I had done for her a few months previously, she had been down as I remember and we had a long chat about a job she was going for…….this week she told me she had got the job and was still there and enjoying it very much and her life was much happier. I had forgotten the incident, although I remembered when she reminded me and it served to remind me just how important it is to reach out to people and to never underestimate the power of a kind word!!! My other project is a mural which is coming on nicely……apart from that my week has been full of fun, sunshine and joy!
During the week Lake Worth Voice posted an article on The Cottages of. Lake Worth and I thought I would respond to that by showing you some of the English cottages here where I live……I am in the lucky position of being very near both the countryside and the beach ……lucky me!
Two much tv programmes return this week to our screens, one you all know well is Downton Abby…that stats on Wednesday, series 4, eagerly awaiting that one, I love period dramas. The other one is affectionately known as GBBO, Great British Bake Off, a wonderfully inspiring programme which is all about baking, a competition running over some weeks and eliminating contestants along the way until we are left with one overall winner. The whole country starts baking,……..you have never seen such creations, such decadence, such confectionery and such detail! Tasks are set and accomplished, some better than others, there are highs and lows, tears and laughter…….I cannot wait! Cookery shows abound here, there is hardly a channel that does not have a cookery show on at one time or another……you either love them or hate them….I love them!
Well, I can hear the closing ceremony starting so I will take my leave and report back next week……..please have a glorious week which you enjoy to the full.
