This book was published in 2002 and re-edited.  From the acknowledgment page  I borrow this snipped  “The idea of editing this book grew out of two conversations  ……………..on the lectures I was developing around Russell Kirk’s masterful survey of Western civilization, The Roots of American Order.    ……………………………..  a new edition of Kirk’s earlier book called the American Cause since it was in some ways the forerunner of Roots.  I agree that the connection was important, but was not sure when I could devote the time to tackle it.   Then came September 11th.  Suddenly the time-in the old Greek sense of khronos or ripeness-made The American Cause an extremely complelling book. “
